Check out 7 links from our site you may be interested to read!

Tripbase started a great project a few months back. Or, that is at least when we were nominated by 1000 fights to join in. Maybe it’s been around for longer? None the less, it’s about time we finally took part!

The project is meant to connect travel bloggers together and give them a chance to show off some of the amazing content from their sites by sharing 7 links.

Scott and I have been running Dream a Little Dream since April 2008! That’s 3 years!! We’ve been around off and on for the last year. But still, choosing 7 links in the following catogories have been quite a challenge. We have tons of posts from a long time ago we love and didn’t get much exposure due to being a new site in the travel world. On the flip side however, all of our more recent posts are just at such a higher calibre due to everything we’ve learned in these past 3 years to create better content and get more exposure.

Anyways, after much hard thought here is what we came up with:

OUR MOST BEAUTIFUL POST:
Christmas ornaments from our RTW trip

http://dreamalittledream.ca/christmas-ornaments-from-our-rtw-trip/

We’ve seen some beautiful things across the world but nothing quite compares to grouping all those beautiful memories together on our Christmas Tree to ensure they last a lifetime!

OUR MOST POPULAR POST:
Banksy vs the Bristol museum

If we look at our site stats this one post gets the most hits day in and day out. This paticular exhibit ended a long time ago but still Banksy continues to pull in the numbers for us. It really is quite remarkable how popular street art is.

OUR MOST CONTROVERSIAL POST(s):
1. Cairo from a women’s perspective 2. The Valve Sound System Show Down – Epic Fail 3. Netherlands soft drug policy – is it working? 4. Contemporary Museum in Vienna: Mak

1. http://dreamalittledream.ca/cairo-from-a-womans-perspective/

Okay, I cheated and listed 4. What are you going to do about it? The reason I listed 4 as we don’t really have any posts that have caused any heated discussions or debates. It was really hard to figure out exactly what of our topics is controversial to people. Thus, I’ve chosen 4 topics which I think can lead to a variety of opinions if people actually commented or is a touchy subject.

Just a simple post about our time in Riga, Latvia that continues to soar high in our site stats. Maybe it’s the title that is causing all the attention. Guns and naughty things. Yup. That has to be it!

We are proud of that entire day that ended with the great success of that amazing meal!! May not be as interesting to others but to us this was a very special moment during our travels. In the top 5 for sure.

Banksy is nominated for his work on his feature film documentary, "Exit Through the Gift Shop". This alone makes me want to watch the acadmy awards on Feb 27th.

During our travels in Europe we specifically changed our plans when we heard about Banksy’s exhibit at the Bristol museum. We made it there on the last day of the show, waited in line for over 3 hours and then experienced the best art exhibit we’ve ever seen. (and we’ve seen a ton!). Much to our surprised our little post: Banksy vs Bristol Musuem has become one of our most popular posts. Our site is also mostly discovered through search engines with the term “banksy” of some form. Banksy is a popular guy!

Now, I’ve learned he is nominated for his work on his feature film documentary, “Exit Through the Gift Shop”. This alone makes me want to watch the acadmy awards on the 27th. Don’t think I’ve watched them since I was living at home with my parents with nothing better to do!

It’s really going to be interesting to see if he wins and even moreso what he is going to do to accept the award, that is if he even shows up! Supposedly the Acadamy has been discussing what to do if he fails to appear or even worse (better??) plans to pull a stunt of some sort. Will we finally get to see his face? Personally, I hope we don’t!

If you like street art, anything sub-culture, or heck if you even just like documentaries and haven’t seen ‘Exit Through the Gift Shop’ then go torrent it right now! I’m sure with it being created by an artist that beleives in ‘stealing’ he won’t mind at all. Especially since that is pretty much the theme of said documentary anyways!

Happy New Year. As we look back over the year we've done so much, here is a list of our top 10 moments.

Happy New Year everyone! This year has been amazing for both Dee and I. We’ve managed to suspend our jobs (Dee permanently!), got our apartment rented out, possessions all packed and hopped on an airplane to explore the word! We’ve seen and done some pretty frickin awesome things and written about most of it. So here it is, what we think our top 10 things we did this year traveling.

The DVS top 10 of 2009

How could we not include our Tour de France experience in this? While it wasn’t the most enjoyable experience riding 50 km’s, half in the pitch black dark… it was a most memorable experience.

Newgrange was one of the first ancient wonders. that we saw, and they were darn impressive. You could touch the mounds and walk in a wooden henge

Banksy vs Bristol Museum was one of the best museums we’ve been to. Poor Ronald, why are you sitting on the ledge? Feeling guilty of peddling your death fries and enslaving people to crappy food?

AK-47′s and Naughty Squirrels Who doesn’t want to shoot the real thing? The Ak47 we shot was probably held in some scared kids hands during the Cold War.
Thorpe Park This ride is temporarily shut down for an essential clean up.

Guadi and Parc Guelle were amazing. Parc Guelle was probably one of the coolest pieces of art I’ve ever seen.

A week partying on Sardinia with 4 awesome friends and drum’n'bass. What more do you really need in a vacation? Sun and Bass was wicked.

I always loved learning about unsolved mysteries and conspiracy theories; from the time I could read and watch TV up until today. Whether it’s the Pyramids of Giza, haunted houses and ghost stories, crop circles and UFO’s or Stonehenge, there’s something about the unknown that’s fascinating in this world of information overload where science has the ability to explain almost everything.

Stonehenge has been featured in too many books to cite, on the History Channel and National Geographic and everywhere in between. I was excited to go to Stonehenge and see the circle formation and wonder why and how this was built over 4,000 years ago. Located just outside of Avebury, England – about 3 hours outside of London, it wasn’t too far from where we devised a route to include Bristol for the Banksy exhibit, Bath for the hot springs, and a trip to Stonehenge.

The site that Stonehenge sits on has been occupied since around 8,000 BC, but it was during the Neolithic and Bronze periods that the majority of monuments came to be. Starting with large Bluestones and Sarsen stones around 2,500 BC, the final large stones were completed around 1,600 BC.

Anything look blue to you? I can’t tell from here, and I’m using the zoom!

There’s a small visitor center on the grounds and you walk around a path about 150 feet away from the stones themselves. They’re as big as I always imagined them to be, however, Deidra says she imagined them to be much bigger. Due to the distance the path around the henge is, you can barely see the original blue stones on the inside. There are dull audio talking points all around, and you can see the hill that people would originally walk up. It must have been amazing walking through the planes to walk up that hill, and then see the Stone Henge slowly come up into view. I wish we could have walked that path ourselves, but there is a major road in the way.

Except on special or pre-arranged occasions, visitors are unable to walk amongst the stones. It’s great to be there and see the henges, but because you’re situated so far away and can’t touch the rocks I find it creates a detached feeling. I was looking at the stones and their mysterious beauty, but without binoculars you couldn’t see if there were any inscriptions or make out the colors of the blue stones very well, they all looked the same. It’s really too bad and creates a similar feeling like seeing the Mona Lisa at the Louvre – it’s great and nice, but without being able to get close to inspect it yourself, it’s like looking at a picture. Unlike Newgrange and Knowth in Ireland, two other Neolithic burial mounds with henges that you can get right up and into.

There are a several things that are being put into place that will improve the Stonehenge experience. The biggest improvement is that the historical society is going to redesign the museum as a whole. A pamphlet we received on location stated they’re going to make a tunnel for the major road, making the Stonehenge area to have no sight of any civilization. They also plan to build a completely new visitors center, which will be about 1km away from the henge, down a slight hill and out of view. Once the improvements are completed, all visitors will walk up a hill and witness Stonehenge crest over the hill with dramatic effect. The feeling would be the same as people who visited this site thousands of years ago, and away from the noise of cars. I think this will be such a massive improvement to the area and would even go see it again.

The other way to get more out of your Stonehenge experience would be to pre-arrange a semi-private visit. English Heritage allows small amounts of people to walk within the rings if it’s preplanned or part of a package. (link: http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/server/show/nav.878). You can go either in the early morning at sunrise or late evening after the official hours. At time of this writing all morning slots have been booked up past March 2010, so you really have to pre-plan well ahead or find a tour company with available spots and pay them for it. For anyone who’s interested in Stonehenge more than just passing curiosity, I would say this would be a thousand times more impressive.

Summer Solstice Celebration

And finally, possibly the best way would be on either the Summer or Winter Solstice. English Heritage allows free access during this time as well, within the boundaries so you can celebrate with others during the night and then witness the sun rise through the stones. There are only a few basic rules, no amplified music, glass bottles, large bags and no climbing on the stones. Visiting this way would be a majestic experience, up there with Knowth and Newgrange during the Solstice.

Stonehenge is an important historical site, and the fact that it was built 5000 years ago when humans were still throwing spears made from flint is impressive. With the new improvements and alternate viewing options it has a great future ahead of it.

The four of us – Steve, Karen, Dee and myself – had just finished a relaxing evening in the hotsprings in Bath, and a few drinks in a chill little pub playing some drum’n’bass, and were on our way back to the Travelodge. Walking through the empty downtown streets, it was a cold night even though it was the middle of summer. Enjoying ourselves and chatting it up, we stopped at the crosswalk outside the main bus station to wait for the crosswalk to change when a large Englishman and his lady friend came up beside us.

Just then from far across the street, we hear some random yelling. Knowing this was England and they get a bit out of control, I figured it was just some guy blowing off some steam. But the yelling didn’t stop, and in the shadows from across the street a figure of craziness and destruction appeared. This guy was kicking garbage cans, body checking bus stops and being loser drunk. As he swayed and swerved up to the very same crosswalk we were about to cross, my eyes met Steve and we knew there was going to be trouble.

Someone got far too drunk and was now looking to cause a ruckus. He was pretty young, probably 21 or 22, but looked like he had fallen down all the way from the next town’s bar.
Sizing the situation up, I looked over next to the guy with his lady friend standing beside us, and he reminded me of Dolf Lundgren. About 6’4 and at least 220lbs of lean muscle, he looked like a man who could handle himself. Just then the drunk started yelling in a drunkish slur: “whooo are you? Whoo smuchka fee??” Other negative sounding babble poured from his mouth and just as the crosswalk turned green, the drunk started to cross the street, continuing his incoherent yelling. Steve and I started to walk in front of the girls and kept our eyes on the drunk, knowing in our minds something was bound to happen.
What happened next happened so fast. In the middle of the crosswalk the drunk came running up to Dolf, and literally jumped to swing at his head. Taking the punch like it was from Jean-Claude van Dam, Dolf swung around and proceeded to punch the guy 10-12 times in the head, all within 3 seconds! The drunk was now on the ground with blood coming from his lip. Dolf and his girl starting walking away as did we, all thinking that ordeal was said and done.

But no, the drunkard hadn’t had quite enough and started yelling at Dolf shouting, “Shake my hand asshole” and coming up to him again in a threatening manner. I have to give it Dolf as he stayed calm and kept walking away until the guy pushed him from behind. Another 15 punches in 5 seconds pursued and then it was completely over. The drunk was again knocked down to the ground. Finally, we all made it to the other side of the street and gave Dolf the nod and some praise.

An unbelievable 3 minutes later we saw the drunken guy again, smashing into the bus stop and yelling at nothing. I wonder what the 6 security guards inside the bus station were doing, almost certainly avoiding this loser.

Both Steve and I were pretty happy Dolf happened to walk into our lives at that moment, he certainly saved us a bunch of trouble that night. So my hats off to you Sir, I know who I’ll be rooting for next time Dee watches Universal Soldier on TV.

Dear Jamie Oliver,

This summer my wife Deidra and I toured through Europe with our friends Steve and Karen, sampling the best of the overseas as we went along. Being from Canada we’ve seen some of your shows, and were interested in trying celebrity restaurants in the UK. When we were in London, we had gone to Gordon Ramsey’s steakhouse and were seriously disappointed by our experience, the steaks having no real taste, being quite bland.

So when Steve started talking about your restaurants, and how it would most certainly be different I was initially hesitant to go to another overpriced joint that relied solely on TV fame to get people in the doors. When we were in Bath and looked at your menu, we were quite surprised at your reasonable rates for Italian food. Taking this as a good sign, we walked up to your restaurant with our stomachs hungry from traveling.

As we walked up to the door we were welcomed in by a hostess, and asked to wait a moment for our table to be ready. Looking at the front kitchen everything looked promising; cheeses on display, meats hanging and a huge pasta maker in the front. We could see into the kitchen, and it looked exceptionally clean. The chef’s were busy making their dinners, and the food looked delicious.

Looks like Heaven!

Sitting down at our table we ordered your organic house wine, which turned out to be a fantastic surprise in both taste and low cost. Looking over the menu, our group decided on a primavera, penne arrabiata, and two pumpkin raviolis. They came out just as we were onto our second carafe of wine, and again looked fabulous. Biting into the pumpkin ravioli was like eating a little bit of fall from back home in Vancouver, Canada. The ravioli was perfect and the filling was out of this world, and looking across the table everyone was in agreement. Back home there is tons of Italian food, but what we ate at your restaurant rated as the best I’d ever had, and still since – even after going through Italy for 2 weeks. It had flavor bursting at the seams and all too quick, it was gone! The only thing that may had been better was the Tiramisu we had to follow it up!

There’s a location in London?

Mr Oliver, Jamie if I may, this was one of the finest dining experiences we’ve had, and at a price that certainly makes it the best value. Wondering if it was just your fantastic chef’s in Bath, we visited your London Jamie’s Italian No.5 on Canary Warf to test your spaghetti Bolognese. Again the flavor of the beef came through beautifully, the sauce had substance and an unbelievable taste to it, and the tiramisu once again was out of this world!

Thank you for having restaurants that lives up to the hype, to having food available for reasonable prices, and for not skimping on the quality. Throughout both restaurants your entire staff, from hostess, waiters, chefs and on, have done an utterly fantastic job. Please send our highest compliments to them all, and to you Sir, a pat on the back.

I will most certainly recommended your restaurants to everyone we know, and please open a location in Vancouver BC. With the Olympics coming and your highest standards, you will be most welcomed.

Regards,

Scott and Deidra

P.S. Your food tops Gordon Ramsey’s, not only a ¼ of the cost but ten times the flavor.

The city of London as you can probably tell from our previous posts was quite a tiring experience. Our plans were jammed packed filled with sight seeing, eating steaks, roller coaster riding, attending a few music events, and other adventures. We were highly anticipating our time together in London, so much so we even posted about our plans a year ago. Well, due to previous travel weariness from our past non-stop adventures, being surprised by how expensive the UK was and then sharing a tiny hostel room with a snoring Scott just a mere few feet from all of our ears I think it created some ups and downs for us all. We all had a great time finally experiencing our long made plans in the city where Drum & Bass comes from, but at the same time we were all very tired and couldn’t wait to find some time to just relax and not be so much on the go all the time.

Enter Bath. What sounds more relaxing than a Bath? It was the perfect plan! Spend some days relaxing and recharging in a Hot Spring before we head down to Italy to party for a week at Sun & Bass… Located right by Bristol and giving us an easy access to visit Stonehenge, a must see on all of our lists.

We hopped off our train arriving before check in time at the Travelodge. Having already stayed at the Travelodge in Bristol, we were prepared knowing you have to pay an extra cost to check in early. So, we arrived to Bath with wine and cheese in our bags and scouted out an area to enjoy ourselves. We found the perfect spot right behind the train station where a beautiful canal runs through the city and we choose to pass a couple hours enjoying our wine and cheese before we check in. It was the perfect start to our relaxation stop.

Bath is a great little city. It reminded me much of Baden-Baden in Germany. Filled with beautiful old architecture, cobble stone walking streets, shops galore, fancy restaurants, smiles from happy locals, and a luxurious Hot Spring. The only difference I found was of course the language, and Bath locals seemed much younger then in Baden-Baden.

We really did enjoy our time here, but were a bit disappointed by the only “true” hot springs in Britain, the Thermae Bath Spa.

The price is high. 2-hour session: £22.00, 4-hour session: £32.00, Full day session: £52.00

We had coupons via our train tickets from London giving us 2 for 1 access into the Thermae Bath Spa. What we were not told and told very rudely by was it’s not a 2 people get in for the price of 1. Instead, each person still has to pay. You just get a 4-hour session for the price of a 2-hour session. When we arrived there was only 2 hours left until they closed. So we could not use our coupons

There is no uniqueness to it and I’m beginning to think all public hot springs in Europe are designed the same. More emphasis on the “Roman Bath” style. So, it’s just like going to 5 star spas with swimming pools. Sounds nice… but in my mind this is not what a hot spring is. It is a place to be therapeutic and relaxing much like a spa, and having those services at a hot spring is great. But when the entire place looks like this you get removed from what it really is, therapeutic waters provided to us from nature.

Radium Hot Springs, B.C., Canada

If you really want to experience a hot spring like it should be experience, come to the Rocky Mountains of Canada (even better if it’s the winter!). Enjoy a hot spring in its natural element for a much cheaper price that gives you all day access even if you don’t want to stay all day. You can choose from pools based right beside mountains with views of lakes, inside caves with dripping stag-mites, or free ones at the end of hiking trail inside a rocky pool, or a series of natural pools leading you down to the ocean. The variety is endless with an first and foremost emphasis on the nature of the area, and if you really want those expensive spa treatments there is always this option available to you inside the spa area.

In conclusion, Bath is a great little city to visit to get away from the busy city of London with the bonus of a visiting the only hot spring in Britain. It is a nice relaxing spring once you get past the cranky lady at the till. The rooftop pool has a great view of the city but watch out depending on the day as the water can be cold up there. If you do plan to check it out, make sure to arrive 4 hours before is closes if you have the “2 for 1” coupon from your train ticket or check out this twilight special for £37.50 to make an entire evening of the experience. (Includes dinner)

If you haven’t heard of Banksy before, he’s an anonymous UK based grafitti artist who makes politically charged graffiti artwork around the world. I heard a story one time about him while he was in Isreal. Banksy was in a cab with his gear and asked a cab driver to go to the Palestinian wall. Somehow it came up that he wanted to spray paint on it, and the cab driver told him “no worries man, it’s Sunday and the guards take the day off”. After dropping him off Banksy did 9 pieces of work on the wall (some pictured below) and came back to the cab driver who was laughing his ass off, obviously the Israeli’s don’t take a day off from pointing their guns at the other side. Somehow he had managed to do his thing and get away with it, again. Whether this is true or not it certainly leads to his legend…

I don’t know how he gets away with some of his more creative work, but I’m sure it involves an official looking reflective jacket and perhaps a flashing orange construction light on top of a car. This time though he contacted the Bristol Museum (being his home town) to do an art project inside the museum, and after much bickering about the idea between the head CEO’s and the normal staff the project was allowed, by Bansky terms. He was allowed full access to the museum at night with only a select few members from the museum to see what he was doing.

Longest Line Ever!

The result was nothing anyone would imagine. From the opening day for 3 months straight the line was at least 3 hours long and people traveled to Bristol from all other world to see the exhibit, including us! Our busy European schedule only allowed us 1 day to see Bristol and this exhibit took up that entire day, even though the extra travel and the 4 hour-long line was worth it. Banksy vs. Bristol Museum is the best exhibit we have seen in a museum. Who knew an illegal graffiti artist could accomplish so much. As we stood for hours in that line we often wondered if he was watching his success from afar or disguised as a museum employee since no one knows his identity.

One of the things we had always talked about with Steve and Karen was the possibility of seeing Roni Size while in Europe. Roni Size is one of the pioneers of drum and bass, and his New Forms CD is pretty much what got us involved in this music scene way back when. It was something so different from the other electronic music with broken beats and intelligent rhythms we were instantly drawn in.

Roni Size is a dnb legend. And when we saw that we could see him with the Reprazent crew, it was an instant sell. Off to Get Loaded in The Park we went to see him. Now we’ve been to many music festivals in our day, and have been disappointed from some of the biggest headliners. Fortunately this was farthest from the truth when we saw Roni Size & Represent Crew. It was pretty much the best live music I have ever seen, and I’m so glad that we saw it with Steve & Karen.

One thing about the festival I didn’t like though was the trashiness of the English people. There’s only one type of animal I know that lives in it’s own filth, wallowing and scrounging through the trash for food. We saw people sitting at the food fair and just throwing their unwanted food on the ground; eating in-between trash and leaving whole chicken cadavers while throwing bottles on the ground.

This shit would never fly at one of our festivals back home in Canada. So to enlighten the English during festivals, I’ll illustrate a simple 4-step process on how not to be disgusting.

STEP 1:
Grab your garbage in your hand and locate the nearest trash-can

STEP 2:
Throw it in a trash-can, many are located everywhere. This doesn’t mean NEAR a trash-can, but in it.
(please note in Canada we recycle our plastic but that doesn’t seem to exist here)

STEP 3:
Clean off your hands and pat yourself on the back for being civilized. Well done!

STEP 4:
Head back to the party and have a great time!

With a statement like “The UK’s most thrilling theme park”, a day trip to Thorpe Park was not to be missed. Located 20 miles outside of central London in Chertsey, Surrey UK, catered to thrill seeking adults rather then cotton candy seeking babies. Thorpe Park is proudly boosting at least three “world’s first” claims: first 10 inversion roller-coaster, first horror movie themed roller coaster with worlds steepest freefall drop, and the worlds first and only backwards roller coaster in the dark.

We were prepared to put up with long lines and arrived with a set plan to focus on the big thrill coasters first and bypassing the smaller spin around in circles really fast rides. While walking up to our first choice “Colossus” we noticed you could pay extra to get “fast track” rides. Since the UK had already taken a huge bite out of our wallets we decided to not bother, we had the whole day so we will just make the best of it while in the lines.

Thorpe Park has been in its location since 1979, with the Colossus added in 2002. The line was a never ending left and rights through trees, tunnels, roller coaster tracks with the loud rattle of speed going by, water features, garbage cans, and hornets. The entire time you are enclosed by a picket fence filled of graffiti, gum chewing teens, and the most epic soundtrack music in the world, on repeat. It’s a trying experience but easy to push through with the thought of what is waiting at the end…

The estimated time of wait posted at the entrance was 1.5 hours, about halfway through the epic music abruptly stopped and a soft voice announces that there is a “essential clean up” required which will cause a delay. The ride will not operate again until the clean up is complete. During the wait everyone is talking about “that guy”, the one that had to puke on the ride… 30 minutes go by and finally that voice comes back and we start to move again. After waiting for 2.5 hours we finally got locked into the ride and lost all negative feelings against our wait, Colossus lived up to the epic music paired with it. Now with adrenaline pumping through our systems we were eager to find the next thrill seekers dream ride.

It was Saw: The Ride, again it stated an estimated 1.5 hours wait. This line was perfectly themed with barbed wire fencing, creepy music with the odd movie clip here and there, and rusted old contraptions that made your mind wonder the vicious ways it could be used to torture someone. Then we hear it again… the most dreaded words of the day… “Essential Clean Up at the Saw ride”. The sighs of disappointment moved across the line. We all wondered if it was the same guy as before…

Soon enough a cheeky British voice comes on the speakers and announces to all, “If you have just eaten KFC poppers, Pizza Hut, and drank an entire coke slushy please get out of the line.” A little time passes and the cheeky voice comes back again stating he wants to try an experiment to get us to complete an Mexican Wave, and if we don’t do it right we will all have to try and try again. The ride will not open until we complete it right.” He then lets us all know he can see us through the security camera and the girl at the beginning of the line in the green jacket is going to start. So, low and behold our line does the Mexican wave all through the barbed-wire maze, much to the cheeky’s voice surprise we even did it right the first time.

It took us about 3.5 hours to get onto “Saw: The Ride” due to the essential clean up. But, it was one of the best roller coasters we have been on to date. We figured there is only one guy willing to clean up others puke and well, he is a busy man. As for some reason the Brits just don’t have a stomach for rides, as this essential clean up process happen to us a total of THREE times while in the park. The last time was waiting for the X:/No Way Out ride, a ride we never got to experience as it was near the end of the day, so we managed our time better and left to go ride others.

So in conclusion, Thorpe Park is a thrill seekers dreamland with at least 11 Extreme ride to choose from with many smaller rides in between. It gets our 10/10 for the amount of rollercoaster’s and the quality of them. Arrive with good company to spend many hours in line with, go to the bathroom before you get into any line to wait over an hour, and PLEASE leave your weak stomach at home. If your time is precious, think about investing into a “fast track” for the most popular coasters as it will save you hours.
