I studied abroad in college in Freiburg, Germany, which is just a short train ride from Baden-Baden. Baden-Baden is a lovely town and was a nice weekend getaway for us. I also had some awesome apple strudel when I was there.

@ Dave and Deb : the food and wine is great, family makes it fantastic!
@ Karen it works, it really does!
@ Martin – Apretifs and digestif’s may be a Quebec / East Coast sort of thing, we’ve never really experienced it on the West coast of Canada. That is until we get back and make it popular! And while I’ve had some decent Black Forest cakes in Canada, it’s nothing like the real German ones but I’ll keep my judging eye out when we’re back home!

Well, I lived in Montreal for over twenty years and retired to Baden-Baden a few years ago. I liked your comments and observations, however, I had excellent Black Forest Cake in Montreal with exactly the ingredients you described.May be you should send your baker there to learn. No aperitif or digestif in Canada ? We had this all the time in Montreal although alcohol is quite expensive in Quebec.
I hope you tried also the red wines from Baden. They match any french red wine.
I could hardly find any Germany wines in Canada and those available from the Liquor Commission are awfull! Now you know why I live here.
